Spring 2023

Initially I started out an exercise to bring myself back into daily painting and create imagery that uses pareidolia (tendency to see meaning full in random or ambiguous patterns/images) to stimulate ones imagination through process. Originally following a pattern creation I have pre conceived of 10 canvases 10 pattern marks for 10 days each canvas starting on a different pattern start and rotating each day till all canvases have been marked with all 10 patterns at different end markings. The pallet one color for each day working around the ROYGBIV construct. The merging of pattens created different effect depending on each stage. These were rather flat but color full. Smaller studies I incorporated other objects ( baseball cards & 45 RPM vinyl singles, etc.) and different paints to create textures. Keeping I mind to have enough of the bottom layers viewable. This is an important part. Each layer must be visible for a respectable portion of the piece. Each layer is a part of the past that we keep building with new experiences. Things change and meld & merge but there is always a glimpse of the roots. With the use of circles and trying to stay as abstract as I could thought he exercise I could not help but seeing my simple T.o.W. folk figure wanting to be incorporated. This I have been trying to avoid keeping things as abstract as possible and steer away the cartoony side that I enjoy so much. After enough deliberation/ rationalization simplifying the form and keeping it rough around the edges created just another pattern for me to use and as a point of attention. As I make my marks I have many thoughts but I keep them centralized around the power of the individuals and the bonds they have. Some times is of my marriage, sometimes my parents and extended family, most of the other times it is about the power of the individuals that come to gather in unison to create the union of a movement. The power of the group that grows to create the power of community. How we build civilization. This started to emerge in April this year and the full idea came to floriation around the summer solstice.

T.o.W. Folk

November 2022-March 2023

The T.o.W. Follk cards were a welcoming committee for me back in the practice of creation. After a hiatus of 10 years of art work creation the itch returned to me. I have an abundance of trading cards ( not of any worth) in my possession. As some one who likes to repurpose things this was an excellent vehicle for returning to the practice. Using their forms present on card to create a new image reimagined with in the constructs card. Each taking on their own personalities. It has been mentioned that they are ghoulish and or creepy. To me they are none the different from us. It is as if I taken snap shots of them in their natural environment. They are cartoonish and a pleasure to create. When I started the Blue series I wanted to create some sort of environment I could explore where they could possibly reside. The use of the cards is an import thing for me. Growing up every boy in the neighbor hood & school had some sort of trading cards and you traded. It was the thing we did. It is nostalgic for me and a bond all kids had with each other. The idea of the card for art that could be traded just thrills me and would like to see a movement emerge from the depths
